Anna Böhler (1740-1809)
Born in Germantown; parents had come from Herrnhut, long detailed account of the setting up of the KinderAnstalt, married at 31, although she did not really want to, married again in 1785, retired to Bethlehem, date of composition 1806. Original ms held at the Moravian Archives, Bethlehem, Pa.
Magdalene Beulah Brockden (1731-1820)
African slave autobiography in German. Born in Popo, Guinea, and was bought by Charles Brockden when she was 10 years old. Did not really want to go to Bethlehem, but Brockden said she should. Came to Bethlehem in 1743, married Andrew. Date of composition 1745? Original ms held at the Moravian Archives, Bethlehem, Pa.
Catharina Brownfield (1716-1798)
Long, detailed, exciting autobiography, originally written in English and them translated into German; born in New York. Originally C of E. Hears about the Brethren and despite her mother’s warnings goes to Bethlehem. 1744 visit and then came to live here in Christiana Dorothea Detmers (1730-1814)1745. Sifting period vocabulary. Kidnapped by brother away from Bethlehem. Married Brownfield in 1747. Date of composition after 1747 (I would judge 1750s). Original ms held at the Moravian Archives, Bethlehem, Pa.
Born in Rhode Island, baptized Presbyterian. Indentured to a Quaker on Long Island at the age of 7 1/2. Came to Bethlehem in 1745. Composition date 1752. Christiana Dorothea Detmers (1730-1814)
Born in Stuttgart, Lutheran. Eldest of 11 children. Father got to know about the Brethren in 1745 in Stuttgart. Mother went into deep depression. Christiana had to take over the household. Throws herself down the cellar steps out of fear. Goes to Herrnhaag. Date of composition, 1801. Original ms held at the Moravian Archives, Bethlehem, Pa.
Margarethe Edmonds (1721-1773)
Born in New York, came to Bethlehem in 1755; partly autobiography; opened the store in Plainfield. Date of composition, post 1755. Original ms held at the Moravian Archives, Bethlehem, Pa.
Johanetta Ettwein (1725-1789)
Partly autobiography, partly written by husband, Johannes Ettwein; born in Wiirttemberg, 1742 went to Marienborn at father’s dying request, married in 1746; 1754 travelled to Pennsylvania (did a lot of travelling in Europe) , her narrative breaks off after 1759 when she goes to North Carolina and leaves her two sons in Nazareth. Although the Lebenslauf breaks off at this point, (1759) her husband reports that she left memoirs of her travels with him written to her “unsichtbarer Freund”. Anna Barbara Fenstermacher (1709-1790)
Born in the Pfalz. Mother comes to her in 1727, when she is supposed to come to America and gives her advice about going to America. In 1768 she goes with her second husband to Lititz (doesn’t want to, wants to stay in Philadelphia with its worldly ways). Date of composition, post-1768.
